Idaho Time Zone Guide
Idaho is one of a handful of US states that spans two time zones. The majority of the state — including the capital Boise, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and Pocatello — follows Mountain Time (America/Boise). The northern panhandle, including Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston, and Moscow, follows Pacific Time (America/Los_Angeles).
The Timezone Dividing Line
The Salmon River serves as the approximate dividing line. Ten northern counties use Pacific Time: Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Clearwater, Idaho, Kootenai, Latah, Lewis, Nez Perce, and Shoshone. All other counties are Mountain Time.
Why Two Time Zones?
The northern panhandle has stronger economic ties to Spokane, Washington (Pacific Time) than to Boise (Mountain Time). This geographic and economic reality led to the Pacific Time designation for those 10 counties.
Outdoor Recreation
Idaho is renowned for skiing (Sun Valley), national parks (Yellowstone's western gateway), hunting, fishing, and whitewater rafting. Seasonal daylight varies significantly at Idaho's latitude, making time awareness important for outdoor planning.
