Understanding Business Days
Business days (also called working days or weekdays) are the standard days on which commerce and government operations take place. In most Western countries, these are Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays.
Why Business Days Matter
- Payroll: Pay periods are typically counted in business days
- Shipping: Delivery estimates use business days (e.g., "ships in 3-5 business days")
- Legal Deadlines: Court filings, response periods, and statute limitations often specify business days
- Banking: Wire transfers, check clearing, and ACH transfers process on business days
- HR: Notice periods, probation, and PTO are often measured in business days
International Differences
Different countries have different public holidays and even different definitions of "workweek." In the Middle East, the standard workweek is Sunday through Thursday. The calculator above supports custom workweek patterns to accommodate regional differences.
US Federal Holidays
The United States observes 11 federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Most businesses close on these days, reducing monthly business days.
Business Days vs Calendar Days
A common source of confusion: "30 days" and "30 business days" are very different. 30 calendar days is about 4.3 weeks, while 30 business days spans approximately 6 weeks (42 calendar days). Always clarify which is meant in contracts and agreements.
